Inspired by Winter Lights
So, before Christmas I signed up to join an online Winter Sanctuary Writing Challenge with Beth Kempton. Today was challenge number 1, inspired by Winter Lights. The first line was a given starting point.
The thing I remember most about that day,
was the sound.
Who knew that in the hypnotic, almost silent,
Sacred peace, created by the flickering
flames of the candles beside me
there could be so much noise?
Such peace and stillness
punctuated by the seemingly deafening crackles
and the delicate puffs of soot from the pothering wicks.
The sounds overrun and envelop your senses
drawing you away from the background
commentary around you.
The flames offer a focus -
the deep pools of molten wax
which succumb to gravity and run
down the body from which they came,
leaving their own little trails;
their story, their journey -
of all they have been and
From where they have come...
...and for me, an intruder to their world,
a bystander and observer
of their own quiet sanctuary,
Their story is mirrored
by their endless flames reflected in my eyes
and their journey is marked,
by the tears which stream down my cheeks.
